Ragusa

Warning! This is an isolated and free place! We Eckhard (1946), 3 cats: and every 3 weeks my daughters Aiin (2004) and Jade (2007) live our simple self-sufficient lifestyle (electricity and water). We offer a "brainwashing" that is detached from the life of total consumption, stress, the latest fashions, the lights of the city, from the noise of the cars ... being away from this commercial lifestyle, opens your senses and your heart .. enabling you to find your road while in our magical and powerful valley. We are working (!) on this to find a balance, between the needs of the people here (vegetable garden, comfort, culture) and nature. There is enough space: 14 ha carob trees, olive trees, almond trees, fruit trees (figs, oranges, lemons, avocados, nuts, apricots, pistachio, pomegranates, persimmons, apples), fields of wheat, vineyards and of course many brambles, a good spring, the vegetable garden throughout the year, a natural swimming pool, a sauna, a solar shower, solar drier and a hexagonal wooden kitchen, bathroom and a compost WC. Accommodation is in a wooden house for 2 people and a house which has been rebuilt using green methods which can accommodate 4 more people.
I'm a Belgian immigrate, who has been in Sicily for years now. I took on an abandoned house in the country and we want to produce all the fruit, vegetables and legumes I and others need for food self-sufficiency. Aside from that, I would also like to introduce poultry for home consumption and actually I'm able to host tourists. I still would like to build a workshop for processing dry fruits and vegetables The house is mainly restored, and the fields, orchards and gardens are partially planted, some are growing and some still have to be planted. For now, WWOOFers are hosted in a dormitory in the main house. We always eat together and we are open to all diets. I speak Italian, French and English. You can reach us by public transport to Modica where I can pick you up. The nearest village is 4 km from home where there are all the basic shops. Nearby, you can visit the Cava d'Ispica, Cava Paradiso, Modica, Ragusa, Scicli, Noto. I'm working towards a type of agriculture and simple living based on self and economic autonomy. I know that 100% would be a utopia, but we try to get close, to prove that you can live well with a self-managed work..
We are a small farm, located in the characteristic Modica countryside, in addition to the domestic vegetable garden we produce small capers and olive oil productions, all strictly organic, the nearest village, Modica, is 3 km away, the sea is 20 minutes away of car. We are Antonio and Elena our goal and to live the dimension of the country: food self-sufficiency, knowledge and respect for natural cycles and biodiversity awareness of environmental and social issues, sustainable tourism, cultural exchanges that we want to share with WWOOF fellow travelers. Work: helping with the various seasonal jobs, mainly keeping the soil clean during the year and harvesting the capers from June to July to harvesting the olives in October November. Small house maintenance jobs with Antonio. Availability: almost all year round. Hospitality in a new very comfortable and independent single house. Duration of stay: generally for two weeks or by arrangement during the harvests. The time of the collaboration, as indicated in the Wwoof regulation, flexible daily and weekly, according to the needs and the weather. The visiting members will be followed by Antonio for the agricultural work and by Elena for any housework. Meals mainly vegetarian, will be prepared and consumed together in the family. Languages spoken a little French and Russian well. Nearby airports: Catania and Comiso Buses from Catania and Palermo Train from Syracuse. Contacts: Antonio.
We are building a dream. We have developed a permaculture project and slowly we would like to bring into reality what is still on paper. We like to cook and eat, we make bread and other baked goods twice a week, we always have fresh and seasonal vegetables and we make preserves of what we cannot eat right away. We would like to collaborate for agricultural discourse, synergistic garden management (39 raised beds), fruit and olive trees, care for animals, earthworms, seedbeds and the planting of new plants. We are also working on small bio-constructions such as compost toilets, outdoor showers, benches, dry-stone walls, pergolas, etc. Our guests will always live with us, in the family. In winter in a triple room inside the house and in summer in a caravan near the house equipped with external shower and compost toilet. Volunteers will be involved in all our activities including domestic ones. We will share meals and work, and also moments of relaxation, children are welcome. We speak Italian, quite good English, we understand Spanish and we can make do with French. The house is large and equipped with wifi, the caravan is only used in the summer months. We are a small farm and our jobs vary according to the season. In summer we are very busy with the reception of tourists, cooking and cleaning as we run a b & b at home, in this period we must take into account that Sicily has a very hot climate, so we will work in the garden early in the morning, in October/December we are mainly engaged in olive harvesting, pruning and harvesting of wood, in the period January / April we host courses related to our business and therefore on agriculture and ‘homemade’ so we will need help at home and in the preparation for these events.
"Solidarity across borders, against the abandonment of the countryside, for a lively life" - our motto from 1992 (the result of the struggle against the missiles in Comiso and a tie between Germany and Italy ) is still valid today. Our 4 ha of land is located on the hills of the Monti Iblei between Comiso & Chiaramonte Gulfi, with some restored houses which are used for hospitality and private homes. Renate ('57), Pietro ('82), Frida ('87) and Elia ('14) live here. Renate is a painter, cook and artist and has carried out this project since the beginning. Pietro and Frieda are ex WWOOFers who traveled over a year by bicycle and in 2015 became part of this project. In 2017 Renate has decided to spend some time traveling and so Frida and Pietro and their son are taking care of the project. Elia at the moment attends nursery school and takes part willingly in everyday life along with other families with children in the area. WWOOFers can help with harvesting (almonds, carob, olives, Thyme and figs), caring for the land and the vegetable garden, pruning, cutting wood, making bread, jams, conserves and syrups. Whoever comes here finds a simple lifestyle in harmony with nature. Heat and electricity come from solar panels. We believe that attention to daily tasks is fundamental to create the world we desire. We are part of a network of people who support through barter, mutual assistance and exchange of knowledge. Wwoofers (max. 2 persons) are housed in room or a caravan. People with children are welcome. We eat vegetarian meals together. Italian, English and German spoken. Email is not read on a daily basis, immediate information via mobile phone.
